Have you ever considered illustrating one of Sappho's poems?

Yes. A great many of those are upcoming, in House of the Muses #7-#9. Aphrodite will be back, in context with Sappho's "Immortal Aphrodite" poem, the "Immortal Lovers" Poem and even the mysterious poem that is the last surviving piece of Dika's work, kept safe by Sappho herself.

The eye's of your characters look creepy, have you tried to make them more alive?

Not sure what you mean by that one. You'll have to give me some examples.
Sure, I make them look alive. They squint, they glare, they fly open wide in surprise at appropriate moments. The eyes have sparkle in them. I've seen so many other 3D comic series where even the characters themselves were emotionless and posed.
In House of the Muses 1 I did have issues with some of the Mat files for the eyes because they rendered in flat, odd colors. These days I use more realistic mats for better results.

Do you think of yourself primarily as a writer or illustrator (or maybe as simply a storyteller)?

When you pull out an old manuscript that you'd just about given up on, and immerse yourself in a 3D program, get that Eureka! moment and spend the next three years writing, rewriting, creating a new world at your fingertips and watching characters you know and love take 3D form, that kind of description seems to pale.
When I was writing, taking Advanced Novel Writing courses, I was doing to a degree very well, but couldn't get some stories to click. When I was illustrating, I never thought I was all that great at it, tho my friends thought I was.
Meshing it all together gave me wings as a storyteller. I've penciled some pages for House of the Muses 3, and plan to do a better job of that in #6.
Yep, I guess I'm a storyteller. These stories have been in me for awhile, and I have enough to keep me telling stories for a long, long time.

Did you attend art school or are you self taught?

Both. I started doodling at a very early age, and got lots of attention at Drakesboro school both for my drawing and ability to read at beyond high school level.
My art teacher from grade school to high school was Mrs. Wells, who encouraged me to reach farther.
I studied toward a degree in Fine Art and History at Western Kentucky University from 1984-1987, and achieved an Associate Degree Cum Laude in 2006 at Sullivan University/Louisville Technical Institute for Computer Graphic Design. I klepped out of a load of classes at Louisville Tech due to ability and job experience: I am the only student there to ever complete a 2 year degree in 1 year, three months.

Pam Harrison has been one busy lesbian since last year, when we introduced you to her and her innovative comic, House of the Muses: The Latter Days of Sappho of Lesbos.

Earlier this year, Harrison received the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant, sponsored in part by Jane’s World creator Paige Braddock. As a result, House of the Muses is now on sale worldwide and has garnered more LGBT fans than ever.

Issue No. 4, “Immortal Lovers,” has just been released and reflects growth in Harrison’s 3D computer graphics technique as well as some interesting new story developments.

I’m excited about it because as this year’s recipient of the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant, my interview with last year’s co-winner, Tommy Roddy, creator of Pride High (he tied with Justin Hall, Glamazonia The Uncanny Super Tranny), appears on pages 40-45!

Why do these growth spurts hurt so much?

I'm not really in my happy place this month. There's a little TOO much going on. Funny how some events in my own life seem to parallel the struggles of my main character sometimes. At this point in my life--and my fourth book--I'm at a crossroads, same as Dika...and I wish I could trade places with her right now.
Ugh. I'm exhausted. I'll add more to this tomorrow.

It's set. On the weekend of June 19-20, 2009 I'll be at the Kentuckiana Pride Festival alongside my partner's "pet" charity, The Animal Refuge Center. It promises to be a great weekend, and I'll have promo flyers, copies of House of the Muses 1-3 (and hopefully 4 if I can make my publication deadline), and House of the Muses t-shirts.
I secured myself a full-page color ad in the Kentuckiana Pride Guide for this year and hopefully that will get word in the LGBT community that I am out and about!

Been working with a lot of up and coming artists lately, and I'm seeing a need that needs to be filled. I've advised a number of webcomic artists to put their series or comic strips in print. Many don't have the time or the expertise to set up their work for print!

That's where my 15+ years of graphic design/prepress expertise comes in. My House of the Muses miniseries is now at Book Four, due to go to print in early June. I've published my books through Ka-Blam.com digital print-on-demand and my series is now in paperback through IngramBook. My books are now available at Barnes&Noble.com and Amazon.com worldwide.

1. What kind of book are you printing? Would it be better in comic or paperback?

2. Color or Black and white? Number of pages?
The number of pages allows me to quote you according to my per page fee, plus shipping and handling if required.

3. I will not be able to ink or color your book. If the art you supply is too low a resolution, (72 dpi web as opposed to 300 dpi+ for print) you may have to ship your originals for scanning and have them recolored.

4. I can submit your finished book to POD outlet of your choice. Account registration and printing fees will apply.

Q: For someone like me who has lived in the world of non-print, what does "prepress" mean? And, how may I use your services?

A: I format comic pages for print. There are standard book sizes depending on what people want, and many aren't sure how to set up their books. I can set up books for comic strip and comic book sizes. The fee depends on how much work is involved in my assembling the books. I can scan artwork, format it in 300 dpi and other print specs and assemble it in the book templates. AND submit it to press for you.

Q: Got it. Prepress is page set up. I do everything digitally, so no scanning.

A: No problem! I can handle digital files, too if you have those ready and want to print. Submit your work to me on a CD and I can handle the rest!

The rumors about my starting an independent comic collective...are true.

...But the details are still up in the air as of yet. Recent drops of readership at our favorite comic site, counterbalanced against the wishes of some of us wanting to launch our own print series (I'm obviously not talking about myself, here, I'm already in print) have made a number of us put our heads together and bring up serious concerns about our survival.

I did mention to Kurt Sasso last Thursday that I would be looking at ways of "giving back" in seeking out a number of talented unknowns to launch some anthologies and to give some of them exposure with my upcoming House of the Muses #6. That issue will be a tie-in between the past and the present as Dika learns in-depth what those nightmares of blood, fire and steel were all about. The setting will be the same era as the Age of Bronze Graphic Novel Series by Eric Shanower. No, he will NOT be involved in this issue, but I've had the concept rolling around in my head for it since 1987 and when Roy Duncan sent me a copy of one of the books in the series a couple of months ago, there was a very audible CLICK inside my head on what direction I wanted to take it.

Because I am still building my credibility as a published artist worldwide, I am thinking it would be a super opportunity to get the best of the best up and coming artists, and showcase their talents in House of the Muses #6. Then I do want to take that collective of artists and do the anthology, the idea of which is based on The Thieves World series, originally the creation of Lynn Abbey and Robert Asprin.

What the theme of the anthology will be is still undecided; I have had a science fiction series on the backburner for awhile, but I'm open to discussing the theme with our collective artists and deciding which direction we want to take.

I'll be setting up the pencils for House of the Muses #6 in June, and will be sounding the clarion call to collaborators to compete in what can only be called Webcomic Idol 2009 (I've already been informed that name has been taken so I'll have to come up with something else XD). I'm setting the bar, and I look forward to seeing where we go from here. The world is a wide-open place, and a collective of talent really CAN survive.

5/14/09 Interview with Kurt Sasso (VertigoX) at TGT Webcomics

My buddies at The Villain's Corner: Webcomic Chat were a little disappointed that I dropped into tonight's call so late. Paul Shelley and Roy Duncan were hoping I'd call in and tell them all about my interview last night with VertigoX at TGT Webcomics.

Well, as we say in Kentucky, Ah was tarred! It's been a long workweek and even now as I work on the latest page of House of the Muses #4 I'm about to nod off in my chair. Kurt Sasso asked me to deliver a spoiler for this book, and it's one that has my readers talking. :) Especially the one reader that bought Lyra Graeca, the collected translated works of Sappho. She's announced that she now knows what's going to happen with one of my main characters (I told you all I was writing from these works), but she knows she's forbidden to tell.

I was smiling a few hours before the podcast. Even though I'd been on a few previous interviews, I was curious about what we'd be covering on the TGT Webcomics podcast. Kurt was reassuring and explained that he loved the informal, off-the-cuff format type of interview. "Really just talk as much as you want about your comic and projects you have on the go," he told me. "It's all about you."

With that soothing, easy-going voice of his, it's easy to relax and be yourself with Kurt. His co-host for that night was Byron Wilkins, a sharp talented artist in his own right who quizzed me quite thoroughly on my 3D expertise, but they treated me like a celebrity all the way.

TGT Webcomics' hosts have a real love for what they do and an enthusiasm to share it. I'm getting addicted to these podcasts; it feels like the 21st century version of the old-time radio shows my grandparents used to rave about, and we're rubbing elbows with some of the hottest up-and-coming artists in the biz. Anyone that turns down the opportunity to be a part of this fun and exciting pastime is really missing out.

Why, oh why would you want to see an old dame?

Had myself a hot date with Choi, my hairdresser today. My darling knows I've been busy of late and she scheduled a henna, cut and style. A lot of people seem to love me with auburn hair.
Seems to be a power style. :) Anyway, I like it.
Check out what's going on in our independent corner of the world! Our clique of talented artists has gone commercial: Dr. Argon is selling coffee and Jermaine MacGruder of WarriorBorn is an enthusiastic promoter of the product.
I've had a number of affiliate links on my sites for months now and have put monthly promotions for Things From Another World Comics on my DrunkDuck site. The bargains get better, so you folks need to keep your favorite starving artists creating their very best for you by supporting our sponsors!!

We have a lot of awesome talent in this community right now. I'm setting up a CafePress.com site for House of the Muses merchandise as soon as I set up a poll for what readers really want to buy. Don't have any plans for Dika lingerie in the works yet, but if it's possible it will be out there. Kind of scares me tho...if we're all co-promoting each other, it beggars horrible images in my mind that Roy Duncan would be modeling the lingerie on a mannequin with those Dr. Argon black latex gloves.... :P

What other news do I have to report at the moment? Oh, of course--I'm prepping House of the Muses #2 and #3 for paperback production through Lightning Source and they will be onsale worldwide. House of the Muses is scheduled to appear in the IngramBook Newest Books in Print in June 2009 so that little boost will hopefully help some sales. House of the Muses #4 is over halfway finished and needs to go to print end of May 2009!!! I'll be formatting that for comic and paperback and getting it off to Lightning Source as well.

A Month of Self-Published Comics: House of the Muses #1-3

This month I am posting a review of a different self-published comic book each day for the rest of the month! Here is an archive of the books reviewed so far!

Today I am featuring Pam Harrison’s House of the Muses #1-3.

Let me get something straight right off of the bat. I’m honestly not a fan of the 3-D art style that Pam Harrison uses for House of the Muses. I think it is a very impressive level of 3-D art, and it is remarkable that she is able to tell such a completely realized story with 3-D art and not have it look ridiculous. That’s to her great credit. She’s a whiz with 3-D art, it appears. That said, I just don’t think that even the best 3-D art has gotten to the point where I personally dig it. That’s just me. I am not saying that the art is BAD, by any means (heck, I think Harrison is probably one of the best 3-D comic book artists that I have seen), just that it does not appeal to me.

In addition, there are many times in this work where it seems apparent that this story originated as a prose work, as there are large chunks of text here and there. Almost early-Spawn levels of text.

I wish to get those things out of the way to start, because those are my only two critiques of Harrison’s work, which otherwise is a tremendously entertaining, polished work of art.

The gist of the story is that one of the poems in the collection of Sappho was inexplicably written in Spartan dialect. So Harrison thought, “Hey, there is probably a really fascinating story in there somewhere about a Spartan woman traveling to Lesbos.” And that, in effect, is what House of Muses is about, a Spartan woman named Dika and her journeys through life.

House of the Muses mixes action, romance and drama in a extremely mature fashion, while still managing to always keep the story not too difficult for a teen reader to grasp. It’s an extremely mainstream work, with a little bit of something in there for everyone.

It recently was awarded the fourth annual Queer Press Grant from Prism Comics. It is a well deserved honor, and I hope it may lead to even more distribution of this comic, which already looks extremely polished......

One Blog Leads to Another - Increasing Comic Visibility in a Fast-Paced World

I was up half the night last night with Frumph, Vertigo-X and some other webcomics pros as Frumph walked me through setting up the ComicPress site for my series. The guys at webcomicplanet had done a Twitter data collection survey asking people to tweet in their top 5 webcomics. Despite my series' popularity in Europe and the win in March 09 of the Prism Comics QPG Award, my comic was not even mentioned.

So yesterday Vertigo-X approached me about the possibility of setting up at webcomicplanet. Was not really thrilled about the idea of having another website to update; however, I do have House of the Muses pages through book 4 already prepared, and if it gets me new readers I'd be an idiot to say no.

So until the wee hours of the night, as my sweetie slept off dinner, Frumph held my hand and helped me set up this site:

When The Future Meets the Past

At the time of this writing, it's one of the busiest times in my life. I found it necessary to do a complete rebuild of my website; for one because it's been put together as a mish-mash of bits and pieces over the past five years, and two because things have grown to the point that I really need a complete and entertaining showcase of my work to date.

All the talk of the House of the Muses European Tour is still in the planning stages. Britta Madeleine Woitschig, who has been promoting on my behalf in Europe, gave me a few outlines of what I'd need on hand to make that work. I'll be setting up some videos here in the coming weeks to give everyone a behind-the-scenes look on how this series is put together. I hope you find it as entertaining as I enjoy putting the series out there for you to read.

What about an exhibition (in 2010)? Do you got a concept about such an event? I think about an European tour by coordinating comic salons and other partners. Your grassroots globalization projects is a kind of role-model that should attract a lot of people, also outside the comics culture and the lesbian culture, because you write an all-audiences story.

Let me know more about your time schedule! According to that I will coordinate my activities in Germany and Europe to best support you.

Some minutes ago I wrote to Paul Gravett (http://paulgravett.com/), the most important comics journalist in the UK, who could push the original edition!

The big convention in Germany is biannually, and the next one is in 2010 in Erlangen, Bavaria. But there are more in the Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) and France, there are also ones in Italy, Spain and Poland. I can support you as your agent: I look out for the time schedule and will build up the contact like I have done with the translators. Don't worry, we are on our way: step by step walking on and on.
